Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures we offer. Performed for localized fat reduction, liposuction can help you slim down areas of your body that don’t respond to exercise or dieting.
Dr. Ku may also use liposuction during procedures like male breast reduction, abdominoplasty or neck contouring. It’s not a procedure for weight reduction, but a surgical procedure for targeted removal of fatty tissue. Here in Riverside, Dr. Ku offers liposuction as a single procedure or in combination with other body contouring procedures.
Liposuction: Is it right for you?
Liposuction is best for people who are bothered by areas of fat that will not go away, despite their efforts to slim down through physical fitness and a healthy diet.
Ideal candidates are relatively young and have a stable body weight. Obese patients are not considered acceptable candidates for liposuction.

What to Expect During Liposuction Surgery
Liposuction at our Riverside plastic surgery practice requires 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. Limited procedures can be done in an outpatient center or office, while extensive liposuction requires a hospital stay. Anesthesia also varies, with local anesthesia used for limited procedures and general anesthesia for a more extensive procedure.
Small incisions are made near the fatty areas. A tumescent solution infiltrates the fatty tissue, which minimizes blood loss and discomfort, while lidocaine and epenephrine promote comfort and ease of the procedure. Using a narrow tube, Dr. Ku removes the fat with suction. If necessary, bodily fluids that are lost during surgery can be replaced intravenously.
Recovery and Aftercare
Don’t expect to look or feel perfect immediately after liposuction. You may experience some fluid drainage from the incisions. Dr. Ku will place a small drainage tube beneath the skin, preventing fluid build-up. A snug elastic garment will help control swelling and to help your skin contract to the new contour. Dr. Ku may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.
Although newer liposuction techniques can help reduce discomfort, you may experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding and temporary numbness. Pain can be controlled with medications prescribed by Dr. Ku, but you will likely feel stiff and sore for a few days.
