What to Expect During Your Tummy Tuck

Surgery is performed with general anesthesia, and usually requires 2-3 hours to perform. During your tummy tuck , Dr. Ku will make a horizontal incision below your bikini line and around your belly button.

The doctor will then lift or remove loose tissue from the abdomen. Using sutures, he will repair underlying muscles of the abdominal wall. To achieve the best results, Dr. Ku may recommend combining the procedure with liposuction on the abdomen and flanks.

Recovery and Aftercare

Plan for about two weeks of downtime, when you'll need to take prescribed pain medication and antibiotics. Drains are used to prevent fluid buildup, and they are usually removed within 24 hours. You will be instructed to return for removal of sutures within 7 days. To promote optimal skin contraction, you will wear an elastic compression garment on your abdomen.

Within 6 weeks, you should no longer need to wear the compression garment and can return to full activity with no restrictions. Scars will fade as they heal over the next several months and should be protected from the sun to prevent darkening.
