Rhytidectomy

Facelift surgery, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce some of the visible signs of aging on the face and neck regions. Through the removal of excess skin and fat, a facelift can create a more youthful, refreshed appearance without visible scarring.

Riverside plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Ku frequently performs facelifts in combination with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as brow lifts and eyelid surgery.

Facelift Surgery: Is it right for you?

Ideal candidates for facelift surgery are typically between the ages of 40 and 70 and wish to reduce the depth or severity of excess skin or fat around their face and neck regions. Younger individuals who have excess skin in their face and neck regions due to significant weight loss may also be potential candidates for facelift surgery.

During your consultation with Dr. Ku, he will be happy to answer any questions you may have. After a medical examination, he will also be able to determine if facelift surgery is right for you. Factors such as medical history, facial bone structure and skin elasticity will be taken into account during your consultation.

What to Expect During your Facelift Surgery

Facelift surgery can take anywhere from 2.5-4 hours depending upon the extent of your procedures. It is typically performed under local anesthesia with a sedative to make you drowsy. There are several surgical techniques that may be utilized during your facelift procedure. During your consultation with Dr. Ku, he will help you decide which method will best help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

In most cases, incisions will be placed in front of and behind the ear. These incisions may extend into the scalp as well. Once Dr. Ku has made the proper incisions, he will gently separate the skin from the underlying tissue below. The excess skin is then either removed or repositioned on the face. Dr. Ku may use liposuction to remove excess fat pockets in the neck or jowls. Once complete, incisions will be closed with sutures. Dr. Ku may also apply a dressing to your face and head to minimize swelling and aid in healing.

Recovery and Aftercare

Following surgery, you may experience some discomfort and swelling. Elevating your head for the first few days following surgery will help to minimize swelling. Bruising and swelling should subside within a couple of weeks. Dr. Ku will provide you with specific aftercare instructions. Sutures are typically removed within a week of surgery.
